Eating Disorders

An eating disorder is a serious and life threatening illness that is detrimental to the body and mind.  Eating disorders are characterized by abnormal eating habits, such as:

  • severe food restriction
  • binge eating
  • purging (oftentimes by inducing vomit or abusing laxatives).

These patterns can lead to severe emotional distress, mood disorders, and feelings of losing control.

Eating disorders can also lead to dangerous physical complications, including:

  • loss of bone density
  • loss of muscle mass
  • low blood pressure
  • changes in heart rhythms
  • cardiac muscle damage
  • weakness
  • loss of menstruation
  • tooth decay
  • gastric tearing and bleeding
  • malnutrition
  • dehydration
